Walking in the Spirit

At the start of the year, people commonly set goals to enhance their health, relationships, or productivity. While these aspirations are worthwhile, they frequently lose momentum by February. Why? Recent studies reveal that only 6% of New Year’s resolutions are sustained throughout the year. I believe these goals often fall short because we focus too much on striving for more, instead of practicing steady consistency over time. Resolutions are frequently fueled by fleeting emotions rather than rooted in enduring purpose.

Yes, the Bible encourages self-improvement but not in the way the world defines it. Instead of focusing solely on outward change, Scripture emphasizes the transformation of the heart. Proverbs 16:3 reminds us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” This verse underscores the importance of aligning our goals with God’s will.

This year, I've chosen to abandon New Year's resolutions altogether and concentrate on a single ultimate goal: living purposefully with a life centered on Jesus. I'm weary of the "start again Monday" approach or the "new year, new me" mindset. Honestly, life is challenging, and I'm exhausted from setting goals that I don't achieve. Especially when I recognize that a power greater than myself can have a significant impact.

So, in this seemingly endless month of January, I’ve been reflecting on how, as Christians, we should approach resolutions and how we can cultivate a consistency anchored on God. Today, I want to share this with you…

Anchoring Your Resolutions in Faith

Jesus Himself modeled consistency in His earthly ministry. He did not rush to accomplish everything at once but moved purposefully, rooted in prayer and obedience to the Father. This steady faithfulness is a pattern for us, as we consider the year ahead.

A Bible story that beautifully models consistency in Jesus' life is His time in the wilderness, as described in Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13.

In this passage, after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, where He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. During this time, He was tempted by the devil three times. Each time, Jesus responded with Scripture, staying steadfast in His commitment to God’s will and resisting the temptations before Him. His consistency in staying true to His purpose, despite the pressure and challenges, models for us a biblical lens on resolutions.

This story reminds us that, even in challenging moments, staying consistent is essential. True purpose doesn’t come from the goals we achieve, but from the truths that God reveals and works in our lives.

The Danger of Self-Reliance

Many resolutions fail because they are fueled by self-reliance. The world promotes a “new you” mindset, implying that transformation depends solely on your effort. I know first hand that I can not do it all! However, Scripture teaches that lasting change comes from God.

Rather than striving to reinvent ourselves each January, we should focus on abiding in Christ always. John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Our consistency flows from our connection to Him.

As a believer, the Holy Spirit lives within us. The Holy Spirit empowers us to stay consistent, overcome challenges, and pursue our goals with perseverance. Through His guidance and strength, we can remain focused and faithful to the tasks set before us, knowing that we are never alone in our efforts. Romans 8:26 reads "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

The Power of Daily Faithfulness

If you take away anything from this post, take away this: consistency is key and we can not do that alone. Align your goals with a verse from the bible therefore aligning the intention of the goal with a biblical foundation.

Practical ways to remain consistent in 2025 and beyond include:

  • Starting your day in prayer and Scripture to align your heart with God’s will.

  • Prioritizing community through regular church attendance and small groups.

  • Serving others as a reflection of Christ’s love.

  • Tracking your spiritual growth by journaling answered prayers and insights from God’s Word.

  • Creating a personal mission statement and then making decisions based on how well they align with your mission to be more like Jesus. (Side note: it is ok to say “no” to things that don’t fit in!!)

Conclusion: New Year, Same Savior!

The phrase “New Year, Same Me” can feel counter intuitive in a culture obsessed with reinvention. Yet, for believers, it’s a declaration of faith. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” If our identity is rooted in Him, we don’t need to chase every new trend or resolution.

As 2025 unfolds, may we focus on growing in Christlike consistency. Let’s commit to being faithful stewards of the time, talents, and opportunities that God has entrusted to us; anchoring our life’s work on glorifying our Savior. In doing so, we will not only honor Him but also experience the peace and joy that come from a life centered on His unchanging love.

Here’s to letting go of resolutions and embracing the strength that comes from walking in the Spirit.
